Lucus
2009
photography [lambda print, plexi +d-bond]
80 x 60 cm
The photographs depict silkworm cocoons suspended within intricate webs of branches and filaments.
Abstracted from their original context, the images withdraw from immediate recognition.
Scale dissolves, and the configurations oscillate between organic and desiccated, microscopic and monumental, organism and landscape, matter and apparition.
The fragile structures evoke a place that appears simultaneously protective and impenetrable, where beauty and unease, intimacy and the uncanny, coexist in quiet balance.
They seem to exist in a dimension where the ordinary begins to reveal another order of presence.
The title refers to the ‘lucus’, the sacred grove of ancient Roman culture: a space where the visible and the hidden, light and shadow, nature and mystery converge.
